The Patuxent Valley Middle School-Based Wellness Center is a partnership between Howard County Health Department and Howard County Public School System. School Wellness Centers do not replace students' regular health care providers in the community. By providing some health care at school we can help parents stay at work and help students stay at school or more quickly return to school. There is no co-pay or fee for visits at the Wellness Center.
The Wellness Center gives you the option to have your student seen by the nurse practitioner (NP) for urgent care visits during the school day. If your child comes to the health room and could benefit from a visit, you will be contacted to discuss if you want them seen by the NP. There is never a cost or co-pay for services. Students can often return to class quickly and parents can avoid having to pick up their student for a trip to urgent care or to take them home. The Wellness Center does not replace your primary care provider (PCP). For students without a PCP or insurance, preventative care services (physicals and vaccines) can also be scheduled at the SBWC. All students, with or without health insurance, are eligible for Wellness Center services. Use the links below to watch a short video about the program and to complete the enrollment online. Our Nurse Practitioner can provide the following services:
- Assessment, diagnosis and treatment of acute illness and injuries, including labs and prescriptions if needed
- Preventive care including physical exams, immunizations, health screenings and education
- Telemedicine visits if indicated when the NP is not on site
- Management of some stable chronic illnesses such as asthma
