Ben Carson Scholarship Nomination Information:
Patuxent Valley Middle School can nominate one student for the chance to win a Ben Carson Scholarship Award. To be considered, students must have at least a 3.75 GPA, have completed community service, and submit an essay. The nomination is not a guarantee of an award. Please see this link for more information.
Students, if you would like to be considered for this scholarship award, please write an essay of no more than 500 words, and a list of community service activities that you have participated in.
Essay Questions (between 450 and 500 words). Students choose one to respond to for consideration of the Carson Scholarship.
- The Carson Scholars Fund’s theme this year is “Innovation and Inspiration.” Please tell us about each of the following: a. a time when you were innovative and what inspired you to take action and b. what actions you regularly take to inspire others and make a difference and why they’re important to you.
- Dr. and Mrs. Carson created the Carson Scholars Fund to celebrate academic superstars and provide a financial incentive to help them on their educational journeys and are now celebrating the 30th anniversary of awarding scholarships. If you could create a program to help students, what would it be and why?
Student Essays will be evaluated on the following criteria by our committee.
- CONTENT: An essay with ample information, including supporting details.
- ORGANIZATION: An organized essay with a well-developed beginning, middle and end.
- STYLE/MECHANICS & USAGE: Interesting, varied, imaginative and age-appropriate vocabulary. Correct punctuation, capitalization, spelling and paragraph distinction.
- FOCUS: Appropriate information to make the reader clearly understand the ideas being presented.
Interested students should submit their essay and list of community service to Mrs. Chelidona, mchelidona@hcpss.org by November 26th, 8PM. Title your Google document: “(Your Last name) Ben Carson Essay Entry.”
