Dear Patuxent Valley Families and Community,
This week was National School Lunch Week, and I want to take a moment to give a big shout-out to Chris Sibal (Cafeteria Manager) and Shaleta Woodley and Parul Mistry (Cafeteria Workers) for all they do for our students each and every day. I’ve worked the lunch line a few times myself, and I know just how busy those shifts can be—and how important it is that our students have access to a good breakfast, lunch, and snacks to keep them fueled for learning. If you get a chance, please take a moment to thank them for their dedication. To learn more about food services in HCPSS, check out this link.
October is Bullying Prevention Month! On Wednesday, October 22, we’ll be joining others across the country by wearing orange to show our commitment to kindness, acceptance, and inclusion. Let’s stand together against bullying and show our support for anyone who has experienced it.
Families play such an important role in helping our students navigate these challenges. If you’re looking for helpful tools and tips, StopBullying.gov has great resources for both adults and kids. And please remember—if you ever have a concern, don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s administrator or school counselor. You can also report any instances of bullying through this form: Report an Instance of Bullying, Harassment, or Intimidation | Howard County Public Schools.
I also want to share how encouraged and inspired I am by our amazing parents and guardians who attend our PTSA meetings. Last night, both the library was filled with energy, ideas, and a shared passion for supporting our students and community. If you haven’t joined yet, I encourage you to do so! Your membership makes a real difference—helping us stay connected and ensuring our students have every opportunity to thrive. You can join here: https://pvmspta.weebly.com/
Show your Bulldog Pride! Our PVMS Spiritwear store is open now through Sunday, November 9. We’ve got T-shirts, long-sleeve shirts, hoodies, and quarter-zips available in both youth and adult sizes. Orders can be placed online at https://stores.inksoft.com/pat121, and items will be delivered to the school in early December. It’s a great way to stay cozy and show your Bulldog spirit as the weather cools down!
Finally, we’re continuing to recognize National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and I’ve been so moved to see so many students and staff wearing pink to show their support. We’re about to collect donations for this important cause—and yes, I did promise to dress up if we hit our fundraising goal! Keep an eye out for photos later this month, and check below to see how you can participate.
Check out the information below for items we’ve been sending out this week, and a number of new items. Let us know if you have any questions or if there is something you’d like to see in the newsletter. All of this information is also posted on our website at http://pvms.hcpss.org/.
There is nothing too big or too small for us to work on together, so don’t hesitate to reach out.
Regards,
Richard Smart, Principal (richard_smart@hcpss.org)

At PVMS, we will conduct this during morning arrival and are aiming to complete this on Tuesday, 10/21, weather dependent.
Students don't need to do anything to prepare for this drill, but please communicate with your student the importance of this mock experience, so they will know what to do in the event of a real emergency.

PVMS Updates (recurring from previous newsletters)
Support for Families Affected by the Gov’t Shutdown:
As many Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) families are impacted by the federal government shutdown, we understand that many people in our community may experience financial hardship or uncertainty. HCPSS remains committed to supporting all students and families during this time.
Howard County families who have lost pay due to the shutdown may apply for the Free and Reduced-Priced Meals (FARMs) program and the HCPSS Food and Nutrition Office will determine their eligibility status within 24-48 hours. Families that would not ordinarily qualify for the FARMs program could be eligible for the remainder of the school year because of the current loss of income.
Families that are adversely impacted, including those who do not receive FARMs assistance, will have the remainder of the school year to pay off any meal balances incurred during the government shutdown.
Additionally, many students may be suffering fear or anxiety about their family’s current financial situation. Student Services staff at each school are prepared and available to assist students at any time during the school day. Numerous resources are also available for families on the HCPSS website, and other supports are available through the Howard County Department of Community Resources and Services.
October Career Corner (From Monica Stevens Career Readiness Advisor (Monica_Stevens@hcpss.org)
One of our goals as Career Readiness Advisors (CRA’s) is to provide opportunities for our students to self-reflect, develop skills, and explore careers to ensure that all students graduate with a well-informed post-high school plan aligned with their career goals. At the middle school level we want our students to take self assessments in Naviance to acquire and apply self-knowledge to personal learning and eventually career goals; Connecting Passion, Purpose and Path. Throughout this school year our PMVS students will take Naviance self-assessments in each grade level, through their content classes or through CTE classes. Once a month we will be hosting a Career Cafe, where speakers will come in to expose students to careers related to a career cluster we will focus on that month. If you are interested in being one of our career speakers please complete this form. Here is some information on this Month’s Career Cluster Advanced Manufacturing. This month HCPSS is hosting a College Fair. This is a good opportunity to begin exposing students to the variety of colleges that are out there. We welcome middle school students to come with their parents/guardians. More information including registration can be found here.
