Dear Patuxent Valley Families,
It’s time for Spring Break! Whether you are traveling, staying home with family, conducting religious observances, or continuing working through the break, I hope that each member of our community gets what they need from this break from the school rhythm. My family will be taking some time to disconnect and take some time with extended family and friends - it is well deserved for all of us!
There have been many amazing achievements and announcements for Patuxent Valley students this week:
On Monday at Patuxent Valley we took time to recognize the efforts of our April Students of the Month! Each of these young people demonstrated our #BulldogStrong values through their hard work, caring and excellence. Please take time to congratulate them if and when you see them!

Congratulations to our Debate Seminar students. Both our affirmative and negative sides won at the HCPSS Middle School County Debate on Monday! The judges commended the students on the organization of their speeches, their research, strong rhetorical skills, and teamwork.
We are proud of our National Junior Honor Society and our community for their support in our food drive benefiting Grassroots, Crisis Intervention Center. Grassroots provides 24-hour access to quality behavioral health, crisis intervention and homeless services to individual and family consumers in need. The NJHS sponsored food drive collected over 450 items for Grassroots!
On Tuesday, 20 students began a journey participating in Project Alpha. Project Alpha's HCPSS Coordinator, along with former HCPSS students and community members joined us. This is a program led by our school's partner, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated. Since 1980, this program provides a supportive space for students — ages 12 - 15 — with strategies to develop leadership skills, goal setting, and positive peer relationships and decision making.
Today our 8th graders went to see a performance of Romeo and Juliet as a culmination of the unit in their ELA classes. They had a great time and I’m thankful to the staff and parents who helped to make this possible.
Finally, I’m excited to share that the HCPSS Student Art Exhibit is now up and on display at the Mall in Columbia! The exhibit features incredible work from our talented young artists.I hope each of you can stop by and check it out—our students would love the support. Our display is located upstairs near Sephora.
Please join me in congratulating the students whose artwork was selected for the show. They worked hard and truly deserve the recognition!

PVMS Updates (recurring from previous newsletters)
Student Service Learning Update
As part of 6th and 7th grade third quarter science units, students have engaged in a Curricular Embedded Student Service Learning (SSL) experience. When students pass these courses in the third quarter, the 25 hours for SSL will be issued and will appear on the student report card. Similarly, there is a project in grade 8 social studies during the fourth quarter that will be documented this way. This is an updated process to ensure all students who have engaged in these learning experiences in middle school will be issued the hours if they pass that quarter. Students who do not pass the quarter of a course or are not enrolled in SSL embedded instruction will not receive hours. These students will have the opportunity to engage in high school courses that include SSL and/or engage in high school independent SSL projects. 75 Hours of SSL are required by MSDE for graduation and more information can be found on the HCPSS website here: https://www.hcpss.org/academics/service-learning/

Support For Immigrant Students and Families:
The Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) remains steadfast in its commitment to providing all 57,000+ students with a safe, supportive, and welcoming learning environment. This dedication guides our efforts as we collaborate with local, state, and federal partners to support our students and families.
On Jan. 23, 2025, Maryland State Superintendent of Schools Dr. Carey Wright reaffirmed that every Maryland student-regardless of immigration status—has the right to receive the educational support they need from their public school system. She also shared guidance for school systems on responding to requests from immigration or law enforcement officials while ensuring the rights of students are upheld.
HCPSS policies and procedures, along with the State Superintendent’s guidance, continue to serve as the HCPSS foundation for fostering equity, access, and opportunity for all students.
For more information please visit our HCPSS website.
